the clock machine turns you on
this is a collection of new music gathered together over the last year, some of which
we searched for and some of which was
thrust upon us

the original idea was to provide an outlet for bands and musicians who couldn't find one, but as word got around we were approached by numerous people who just wanted to be a part of the re-ignited malicious damage... the result is a unique assortment of unlikely stablemates from many different shades of the musical spectrum, but all with one thing in common - they just want to be heard...

here's what the guardian had to say:
The Clock Machine Turns You On is an intriguing and uplifting snapshot of the state of British music in 2005 (with splashes of colour from around the globe, including Sydney band Persuader and Oslo's Necessary Intergalactic Cooperation). The 16 featured bands were whittled down from "hundreds", says Coles. The album switches gleefully between rock, dance, punk, dub, ambient, folk, blues and electro-pop, and nestling among the clutch of new acts are some respected names from the British underground, such as Barry Andrews and Shriekback, KLF man Jimmy Cauty (with new act Transit Kings) as well as a track from the earlier Orb v Meat Beat Manifesto release.
...the album begins in thrillingly pugnacious style with the furious percussive assault of unsigned Birmingham bruisers Blown, a genuine find. But at the recent album launch gig in London, as if to prove Coles's point, one undoubted star was the extraordinarily talented acoustic blues guitarist Bob Meyer, a man who sings like his heart is buried in a Mississippi swamp but who drives a cement truck in the capital for a day job. Add to that such surprises as the anthemic, stadium-filling balladeering of 30,000 Days, firmly in the Coldpatrol/Snowplay sphere of influence, and Clock Machine begins
to look like a shining example of strength
through diversity.

00:01 BLOWN nanosecond
"no fucking about, straight in to it, full on fast, furious and very interesting - driving rhythm section and thick but crunchy guitar punch holes in my cavity walls - man I love that bass I don't know whether to smile or shit. The vocal is very powerful and very metamorphic as one minute I'm thinking muse, then kobain, marilyn manson even, then sid vicious!" - unsigned central

00:02 PERSUADER more moments of you
sydney band persuader came to life in mid-2004 from a collection of bands that had made names for themselves on the local and national touring circuit... with a common goal to deliver a maelstrom of sound that has some fans reaching for their vinyl copies of many post punks heroes, and new converts turning up at gigs dressed in their crisp finely pressed t-shirts with indie icons emblazoned on the front, persuader aim to put big sweaty riffs and timeless melodies back into people's heads and hearts

00:03 FACES OF SARAH keep breathing
the faces of sarah were formed in late 1998 and released their first ep, belief in 1999... this was an impressive debut getting top reviews from as far afield as chile, japan, usa & germany... they have now evolved into something quite unique - a band of fearless experimenters - never fully subscribing to gothic clichés and rules... a new album is under construction at the moment and due for release on later this year
the band to put goth back in the mainstream
- the most glorious voice in goth music
- meltdown magazine
impurity single of the month - awesome
- metal hammer
simply stunning - sonic seducer, germany

00:04 FAKE IDEAL every word is yours
growing up in the same streets, the four members of fake ideal have known each other since day one and been operating as a tight-knit, all-for-one gang ever since... they formed the band before any of them had played - let alone owned - an instrument, spending the subsequent years devouring music and literature as a means to escape... fake ideal have taken the punches, spilled the drinks, shovelled the shit and plotted their way to sanity... unfortunately they've now disbanded, but look out for a reincarnation

00:05 HEADCOUNT smoking gun
loud guitars, growling bass and thunderous
drums combine to create a heavy punk metal
sound with emphasis on melody... headcount
have never relied on what is hip and fashionable,
preferring to follow their own path through the
murky waters polluted by emo and nu-metal...
perhaps this is why they stand out from the crowd... quickly established for their uncompromising attitude, they've gained a reputation for being, in the words of many a soundman, "the loudest fuckin' band I've ever heard"...this track is from the highly-acclaimed album die monkey die on malicious damage

00:06 ANTENNAE rimshack
uk music search said "...a direct clash between depeche mode-style electro-pop, teardrop explodes-style indie guitars, moody saxophones and a vocal performance that has elements of ian curtis, julian cope and ian mcculloch... beefing up synth-pop elements and placing them against dirty chugging guitar riffs results in a sound that has immediate appeal and urgency... with great vocal melodies and big choruses antennae are a band well worth listening to..."

00:07 SHRIEKBACK the strongest wind that blows
barry andrews has spent the last eighteen months writing, programming and perfecting the new shriekback album... as yet untitled it features martyn barker and mark raudva plus guitar contributions from one of barry's former band-mates, andy partridge of xtc, and is planned for release on malicious damage in june

00:08 CARCASSETTE after hours
over the past two years, songwriter steve aungle, former collaborator of billy mackenzie, has put together a collection of songs with the help of producer pascal gabriel and guitarist anth brown [electric music] which are a hybrid of electro and guitar-based styles... think devo/electric 6/talking heads/beck and you might imagine something approaching the sound of carcassette... dead-pan vocals and a constant layer of noise-based electronics are the common denominator, with a license to plunder any retro style that might take the writer's fancy

00:09 NECESSARY INERGALACTIC COOPERATION asamblea de robots
necessary intergalactic cooperation from oslo
is the result of a fusion between two projects:
kanario the intergalactic dropout and necessary... the additions of guitar player chuck frazier, drummer ted parsons and keyboardist, producer and composer markus o klyve have now given them a full band profile, and has expanded their performing capabilities exponentially...
nic has elements of dub, technofunk, housey jazz and rock

00:10 MASS SPECTROMETER lab coat dude
mass spectrometer is the name of the latest collaboration between new zealand artists Ilmars gravis and michael canning... they have performed and recorded together sporadically for well over a decade with the two of them moving around the world since gravis now lives in melbourne while canning is based in edinburgh

00:11 30,000 DAYS watchful eye
30,000 days was formed in 1996 by singer songwriter nick holywell-walker, creator of a large catalogue of melancholic, hymnal songs influenced by a huge range of bands from talking heads to kraftwerk, being largely untroubled by the press and music business in the uk... part-time session man for seminal angst-rock band killing joke since 1994, nick holywell-walker has come in and out of focus during the last five years but has a slowly growing virus of loyal enthusiasts in all four corners of the globe... this resurrection of a jewel of British songwriting is much welcomed...

00:12 SHADOW KABINET full moon song
"when greyness strikes run to the kabinet of dr. shadow... he'll put the psychedelia back in your step!" - andy partridge, xtc
"somerset! the great trash alchemist, the man with the rock 'n'roll gazetteer in his pocket, the entire youth culture roadmap in his head, trailing melody in his wake like a faint perfumed mist... his ragged juvenile lead tones, as ineffably english as country lanes and the sort of sunday teas nobody eats any more."
- mark hudson, music critic, daily telegraph

00:13 BOB MEYER mary lou
gritty, gravelly, deep down guitar-pickin'
21st century swamp blues from streatham
- a total revelation
...the extraordinarily talented acoustic blues guitarist bob meyer, a man who sings like
his heart is buried in a mississippi swamp
but who drives a cement truck in the capital
for a day job...
neil perry, guardian umlimited

00:14 TRANSIT KINGS oh shit

00:15 THE ORB v MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO matron
this sonic trip to insanity and beyond sees alex 'orb' paterson in cahoots with jack dangers & lynn farmer of meat beat manifesto blending brittle drum with subterranean bass, cycling synth arpeggios and a collage of vocal sounds from whispers to laughter... from the ep Battersea Shield on malicious damage

00:16 TELEDUBGNOSIS crashed
teledubgnosis is the the brain-child of drummer ted parsons, producer/audio alchemist jason wolford and multi-instrumentalist/multi-media artist gregory damien grinnell... a new breed of ambient dub metal scientists, dark riddim warriors, noise sculptors and industrial roots rockers, they have been compared to the sound of adrian sherwood's on-u sound label, with the "low end and depth of a bill laswell recording" - both highly influential sources for the group
